What is folk rock?   Folk rock is a genre that emerged in the mid-1960s, blending elements of folk music with rock music.

So what is folk music music?

Folk music is a type of traditional and generally rural music that has its origins in small social groups and families. Unlike written music, folk music is primarily transmitted orally or through hearing rather than reading. Here are some key points about folk music:

Oral Tradition: Folk music lives in oral tradition, passed down from generation to generation through listening and learning. It is often associated with other activities, such as rituals, work, games, and folk religion.

Rural Origins: Folk music typically originates in rural settings. It reflects the cultural practices, values, and experiences of everyday people in specific regions.

Participatory: Unlike art music (which provides aesthetic enjoyment) and popular music (often associated with entertainment), folk music is more likely to be participatory. It involves the community and is often performed in informal settings.

Variety of Genres: The term “folk music” encompasses various genres across different cultures and historical periods. It includes traditional folk music as well as contemporary genres that evolved from traditional roots during the 20th-century folk revival1.

In summary, folk music is a rich tapestry of melodies, stories, and traditions that connect people to their heritage and shared experiences. Whether it’s the ballads of Appalachia, the mariachi music of Mexico, or the skiffle tunes of England, folk music continues to thrive and evolve worldwide.  Here is a sample of an English folk song.

So what is rock music exactly?

Rock music is a genre of popular music that has a rich and diverse history. Let’s explore its origins, characteristics, and impact:

Origins and Development:

Rock music originated as “rock and roll” in the United States during the late 1940s and early 1950s. It drew directly from African-American blues and rhythm and blues genres, as well as country music.

The genre evolved significantly from the mid-1960s onward, particularly in the United States and the United Kingdom.

Rock music incorporated influences from various styles, including electric blues, folk, and jazz.

Instrumentation:

The electric guitar plays a central role in rock music. It is often accompanied by an electric bass guitar, drums, and one or more vocalists.

Rock bands typically feature these instruments, creating a powerful and energetic sound.

Musical Characteristics:

Rock music is usually song-based, following a 4/4 time signature and often using a verse-chorus form.

Lyrics in rock songs cover a wide range of themes, including romantic love, social issues, and politics.

The genre has become extremely diverse, branching into various subgenres and fusion styles.

Subgenres and Fusion Styles:

Rock music has given rise to numerous subgenres, such as hard rock, punk rock, progressive rock, psychedelic rock, and indie rock.

Fusion genres combine rock with other musical styles, including blues rock, funk rock, pop rock, and Latin rock.

The first ever rock and roll song is generally agreed to have been Rocket 88 by Ike Turner and Jackie Brenston.
