Silver Linings

Happy Easter Saturday, folks. Today is April 11th. Let's hope the Easter bunny has a good N95 mask and can make the rounds tonight!

Whether you're the religious type or not, in light of the Easter holiday, I'd like to take this opportunity to share with you some of the silver linings I have found during our #StayHomeMN stint. In no particular order, here they are:

I got to practice misplaced and dangling modifies with the Second Oldest, especially perfect because I have my own test to take on the subject at the Poynter Institute.

The Oldest is using the 3D printer she got for her birthday 24/7 and even made the news!

She also worked on college scholarship applications, something I'm not sure she would have found time for had she been in normal school mode.

LOTS of sleep. For everyone, but especially the teenagers. This is good because they've been coasting on 4-6 hours of sleep most of the school year. In normal times, I think they take the month of June to recover; however, now that sleep's caught up on, hopefully they will be able to jump right into summer.

Three square meals. Mostly. If you count popcorn or buchta (i.e. everyday cake) as a meal, which we totally do.

Really good food per Coping Strategy #7 from last week's blog post, Kim's 10 Kooky Quarantine Coping Strategies.

Kids learn to cook.

Cheese & Wine hour, an ingenious occasion that never would have been initiated amidst the thrum of  regular living, I first mentioned a few weeks ago in the post, The Great Hunkering Down.

A really, really clean kitchen, and office, thanks to Coping Strategy #8 from last week's blog post.

Gorgeous weather. Not that I have any influence on weather patterns, but boy, it sure has been nice getting outside.

Lots and lots of playtime.

Extended due dates and no late fees on library books! The littles and I are moving through The Capture (Guardians of Ga'hoole, Book 1) at a sludgy pace - and that's okay!

Kids sing and dance together. The Oldest and the Second Grader are nearly performance-ready with their rendition of  "Show Yourself" from the Frozen 2 soundtrack.

No more rushing. We're still trying to learn the dance steps around everyone's respective tasks and responsibilities. At the onset of the quarantine, I thought I had to get everything done in the morning. Then I realized, I have the whole day.

More family time. We debated one night which was worse: to be home alone or to be home with six other people. I think we're feeling grateful to have each other.

If you're feeling cooped up and more than a little desperate or discouraged, especially during the Easter holiday when families will be passing the ham and mashed potatoes via video chat, take a moment to give thanks to the greatest silver lining of all - life.

Much affection to all the readers of the Wannaskan Almanac.
