Wannaskan Almanac for Tuesday, June 30, 2026 Things I Never Knew

There are things that strike you and leaving you asking the question...how could I have not known that.  Take this for example:  We're Not Gonna Take it by Twisted Sister borrows the music progression from a Christmas carol.  Which one?  Well, listen to this.

Sneaky.  I would have never guessed, but now I can't unhear it.  Here are some other things that people should know but often don't:

1.  Ventilation Often Backfires: We are taught that venting anger helps us "let it out." However, psychological studies show that aggressively venting (like punching a pillow or screaming or randomly ramming parked cars) actually prolongs and intensifies anger rather than diffusing it. Quieter reflection or distraction works much better.  That is why you should always silently look into a mirror.

2.  Hearing is the Last Sense to Go: When a person is dying or under heavy anesthesia, the auditory system remains functional longer than sight, touch, or smell. This is why medical professionals urge families to keep talking to unresponsive loved ones.  I have always heard that it was the eyes...because they dilate.

3.  Your Immune System Doesn't Know Your Eyes Exist: Your eyes have "ocular immune privilege." If your body’s systemic immune system ever fully discovered your eyes, it wouldn't recognize them as part of you; it would treat them as a foreign threat and could blind you trying to fight them off.  Hopefully my immune system doesn't read this blog!

4.  The Arrow on Your Gas Gauge: Almost every modern car has a tiny arrow right next to the gas pump icon on the dashboard. It points to the side of the vehicle where your fuel cap is located.  I do believe that it is illegal to look at that arrow until you have already gotten out of the car and noticed that the fuel cap is on the other side.

5.  Trees "Talk" and Share Food: Through a massive underground network of fungi (often called the "Wood Wide Web"), trees in a forest can communicate threats, register distress, and actively pump nutrients and sugars to weaker or younger trees around them.  This can be quite disturbing, especially around those whispering willows.

What are they so secretive about?

Now you know more.  Use it wisely my friends!

  1. And so all this wisdom comes from aimlessly drifting across the Lake of The Woods this summer with the discovery that your boat anchor rope had rotted and your outboard's fuel tank had more water in it than actual fuel -- and the fish weren't biting; good thing you had your phone to call the wife -- who, serendipitously for her, was on her way to Norway at the time. Lucky you thought to bring along that bag of Oreo Cookies, a handful of Slim Jims, and couple bottles of 'Dew you bought at the gas station before setting out, humming the theme to "Gilligan's Isle." 'A three-hour tour ...'

  2. Punching pillows leads to feathers in the air. That's what prolongs anger.
I recommend a three mile walk, a bowl of ice cream, and a nap.
