Teresa and I have been working with the Carter Foundation or rather the Carter Center. As part of the forty-fourth anniversary of the founding of the foundation, the Center has challenged volunteers to walk 44 miles during the month of June to encourage friends and family members to make a donation to the Carter Center.
Last October Teresa and I walked 55 miles along the Thames River in England for five days so this sounded like a piece of cake. We set a goal of how much we wanted to raise and started walking. We happened to be in East Grand Forks on June 1 so we headed to the trail in the Red River Recreation Area that runs along the river. The trail is an 11 mile loop that crosses the river to Grand Forks and back.
We only walked a mile upstream then a mile back to the car. There would be no 11 mile days on this fundraiser. Since the first day, we’ve mainly walked on the trails in the City of Roseau for 2-3 miles. If we walk at home we're on paved County Rd. 8 which is mostly exposed to the strong west winds. There's little but open agricutural fields and the sky, which can be spectacular at times. The trails and streets in Roseau are more sheltered and there's a chance to look in people's back yards.
The Carter Center's main focuses are on eradicating disease and improving health in countries around the world. They partner with local organizations to provide education and access to resources to the poor. The Center's other main focus is encouraging peace around the world. Instead of bemoaning corruption and shrinking democracies around the world, the Center promotes a variety of democracy and peace-building initiatives.
We try to get in a walk every day. This fundraising challenge is providing an impetus for us to walk more frequently and further. As of today, June 19, we only have 11 miles to go to reach 44 miles. I'll check with Teresa and see if she wants to knock off this last bit today. We know we can do it. I've been updating our progress on FB every day we walk, along with a photo from the day. I had previously gone months without posting on FB. Now I've turned into a social media tornado, relatively speaking. Zombie might be a better descriptor.
We say we'll keep track of our miles after June 30 and will keep those pics and updates coming on FB.

Roseau's streets are getting a makeover. We walked 3 miles on 6/18/26, 11 miles to goal. |

I read this and, in my head, I start replaying the great song about If I could walk 100 miles. Walk on!
