Early on Saturday morning my wife left our house. She was on her way to pick up her mom from Texas. Just after she left the house I heard a crash. I am pretty sure that our house isn't haunted, so I started looking for what the problem was. I thought maybe someone had run into the house but after a quick search I found nothing.
I went out into the garage and tried to open the garage door. It went up a little and then stopped. After a brief examination, I discovered that the spring had broken. Garage doors have a big spring that acts as a counterweight, storing energy by winding up as the door is lowered, and then releasing that energy to assist in lifting the heavy door when you open it, making it easier to manually or electrically raise the door by offsetting the force of gravity on the door. Well, when these springs break it makes quite the noise!
I checked with my handman (youtube) to see how difficult it would be to change this on my own. Every video I watched started out with a warning, which made me believe that changing these springs is somehow dangerous. Just to be sure I checked the comments on the videos and it seems like they are known to injure the ignorant...so I knew that I should leave this to the professionals. Like that time I was cleaning my outlet with a fork.
Unfortunately, this was Saturday morning. The garage door shop in town is closed on Saturday and Sunday. That means that I would have to wait for a couple of days before getting the door fixed. It was definitely the most inconvenient time for that spring to meet its demise. It would have actually been better if it had waited a couple of weeks because I would have been on break from school. To be honest, spring break would have been the best time for that spring break.
No...I did not make up a story just to throw that double entendre out there. It really did happen. The preceding events are all true. Only the names have been changed to protect the innocent.
Marion will fix the spring when she gets in from Texas. She loves that stuff.
