Snowbot

Hello and welcome to an absolute wonky-weather Saturday here at the Wannaskan Almanac by way of Grand Forks. Today is March 15th, and I hope you had you pi(e) and ate it too on Friday.

We're coming to you live today from the Great Northern Regional robotics competition and the number one thing on our minds, aside from robots, is the weather.

The week started out with dire predictions of rain, ice, wind, and 9 inches of the white stuff - which my family was thrilled about. "Pack the skis!" I said to our family, in delicious anticipation of a Sunday at Frost Fire north of Grand Forks in the Pembina Gorge.

Alas the gloom and doom expected shifted and is covering other swaths of the state that previously predicted no issues. You can feel the energy at the event, the worry shifting from one group of folks to a new group, just like the weather patterns.

It's hard to stay focused on the big event at hand, the robotics playoffs, which, really, should be the star of this stage. The volunteers around me are all Twin Cities-bound and a collective groan just erupted in the room. It feels oddly surreal after so much preparation.

As a family, we straddle the uncertainty to just head home or linger and enjoy one more night swishing down the water park "toilet bowl" and being lazy on the lazy river. The water park was part of the deal for schlepping our kids to the robotics event where both their parents are volunteering.

Safe travels wherever you are and wherever you're headed. And if you are staying safely tucked in, I invite you to watch the playoffs on the Blue Alliance website or app online!

  1. I noted the lack of people of color, at the Great Northern Regional robotics competitions; at least in the shared image files I opened. Is this common?

  2. I love robots and snowbotics!
So much so all 4 of my cheeks hurt!
2 from smiling and the other 2 from sliding down the toilet bowl so many times in a row on this trip already.
But ya know what they say, "There's a balm for that!" It even comes with a subscription value offering and a lifetime warranty. Doesnt get much better than that!
So Robotics tournaments that come with waterparks scheduled on the itinerary, they're not so bad for the Snowbots!
Aaanndd there's more time to shop in town for some new homecoming decor!
    Target on 32nd anyone?!
Either way it sounds like a joyful time!
Although, "There's no place like home. There's no place like home. There's no place like home." As Dorothy says. 🤪
    Drive safe and good luck!
