Issue 01.
When NASA started launching astronauts into space, they found that pens wouldn't work without gravity (or zero gravity), as ink wouldn't go down to the surface on which it was felt like writing.
Solution A) Solve this problem, took them 6 years and 12 million dollars. They developed a pen that worked: under zero gravity, upside down, underwater, on almost any surface including glass and in a range of temperatures that ranged from below the freezing point to exceeding 300grC
Solution 😎 And what did the Russians do? The Russians used a pencil!
Issue 02.
One of the most memorable case studies of Japanese management was the case of the empty soap box, which occurred at one of Japan's largest product companies. The company has received the complaint from a customer who bought a soap box and it was empty.
Authorities immediately isolated the issue of the assembly chain, which transported all boxes of soap, to the delivery department. For some reason a soap box went empty down the assembly line.. Higher officials asked their engineers who find a good and quick solution to the problem.
Solution A) Immediately, the engineers went to work to devise an X-ray machine with high-resolution monitors operated by two people and thus monitor all the soap boxes that passed the line to make sure they were not empty. They certainly worked hard and fast.
Solution 😎 When an ordinary employee in a small company was raised with the same problem, he did not get into complications of X-ray, robots, computer equipment or complicated; instead he raised another solution: bought a powerful industrial fan and pointed it into the assembly line.
Turned on the fan, and as each box went through the fan, empty ones just flew off the production line.
Issue 03.
A hotel tycoon travels to an Indian city for the second time a year away from his first trip, upon arriving at the counter of a hotel lower star-studded hotel than those of his chain, the employee smiles and greets him saying:
Welcome back sir, how good to see you back in our hotel; surprised in a big way as despite being such an important person, you liked the anonymity and hardly the employee would have such a good memory to know that you were there a year before, wanted to impose the same system at his hotel chain as that simple gesture made him feel very good. Upon his return he immediately put his employees to work on this matter to find a solution to his request.
Solution A) solution was to find the best software with face recognition, database, special cameras, microsecond response time, employee training, etc. etc At a cost of approximately $2.5 million.
Solution 😎 The tycoon preferred to travel again and bribe the employee of that hotel to reveal the technology they applied.
The employee does not accept any bribe, but humbly comment to the tycoon as they did, he said: "Look sir, we have an arrangement with the taxi drivers who brought him here, they ask him if he has already stayed at the hotel to which he is bringing, and if it is affirmative, so when he leaves his luggage here at the counter, he gives us a signal, and that's how you earn a dollar."
Moral: Don't get it Complicated ! Conceive the simplest solution to the PROBLEM. Learn to focus on the SOLUTIONS and not the PROBLEMS.
