The cashier and I have been friends for a number of years, She and her husband were longtime subscribers to The Raven Journal, a magazine I published in Wannaska for 24 years.
She asked me, “Do you have plans for the weekend? Doing anything special?”
“Yeah, I guess,” I said, as I put my bankcard inside my wallet. “We’re renting a cabin at Stony Point on Cass Lake.”
“You don’t seem too excited about it,” she said, nodding in recognition to a local customer coming into the building.
“Well, it’s like this for me, “ I said as I gripped the two cold six packs of Guinness Extra Stout bottles from the counter.
“Most people come up here to go camping or the lake to ‘get away from it all.’ I live ‘away from it all,’ the year around. The only reason I rent a cabin at a resort or go camping in a park is for socialization; the kids and grand kids are meeting us there because, otherwise we’re too far away from it all ...

DeleteWW will warm to his trip, sure in the knowledge that his "away from it all" awaits, not too far away at all.
