On this day in history...way back in 1881...Clara Barton founded the American Red Cross.  Clara Barton is a true American hero.  Her story is an inspiration to everyone.

Clara Barton was working in the US Patent Office when the Civil War began.  She, and others, began gathering bandages and supplies for the soldiers.  Eventually she decided that this was not enough, so she traveled to the battlefields and began to care for the wounded.  She was a nurse, cook, and companion to many soldiers and earned the name "Angel of the Battlefield".

After the war Barton traveled to Europe.  There she learned about the Red Cross, an organization that was based out of Switzerland.  This group was promoting the protection of the sick and wounded during wartime and the formation of societies to give aid voluntarily.  When she returned to America she began to work towards establishing the American Red Cross with influential friends, such as Fredrick Douglass.  Her groundwork was completed in 1881 when the American Red Cross became a reality.  She served as the President of the American Red Cross until the age of 83.

Clara Barton's life work continued on well into her 80's.  She is an inspiration to continue to strive for what truly matters to you.  You can donate to the American Red Cross here.

  1. Did your daughter write this? This entry is far too intelligent and noteworthy to have been written by a satirist/humorist/S.A., such as yourself, so you understand my misgivings here. No, this entry is like a daily Current Event Book Report required of a home-schooled student, prior to her/his sophomore year Engineering/CAD coursework and Statistics Class. Say Hi to Mallori.

  2. You are too cynical WW. Can't Mr. Hot Coco be as altruistic as the rest of us?
I was surprised though that Mr. HC did not include any of the jokes Clara used to tell to cheer up the wounded soldiers.
Like this one: Why do blonde nurses bring red magic markers to work?
In case they have to draw blood.
The soldiers would often respond, "You're killing us Clara. Please stop."
