Wannaskan Almanac for Tuesday, January 28, 2025 TV Time Out

A brief history of television.

September 7, 1927:  Philo Taylor Farnsworth first demonstrated the electronic television.

1930:  First commercial aired on Charles Jenkins’s television program, BBC begins regular TV transmissions.

1937:  CBS is formed in the United States.  This enables people to see BS.

1948:  Cable tv is introduced in rural America.

1950's:  First two color television standards approved by FCC.

1962:  First television sattelite launched by AT and T.

1967:  Color TV's become commonplace in households.  First Superbowl is shown live on TV.

1975:  American overweight crisis attributed to rise in television watching and easy access to McDonald's.

1988:  Stereo TV signals broadcasted for first time.

1993:  Closed captioning is introduced.  Opened captioning is not yet available.

2018:  Wannaskan Woe Be On Days is introduced to literally dozens of people who prefer to read TV instead of watch it.

2024:  Mr. Hot Coco's HD TV suddenly goes black.  It is deemed unrepairable.

No closed captions, no open captions, no captions at all!

Television...or TV...has been around for about a hundred years.  It has been good and bad.  The most popular shows ever are difficult to identify.  Some sources show Jeopardy as the most popular show ever.  Others list shows such as The Simpsons, Gunsmoke, Mash, and Game of Thrones.  I guess we all have our favorite shows to watch which makes identifying the most popular a chore.

Where will television go in the future?  We have seen 3-D television released (with little success).  Who knows what the future holds.  I heard talk of smell-o-vision once, but I think it was probably just a practical joke...perhaps something alluded to by an overly gassy person looking to blame and odor on the television.

This is Walter Hot Coco saying, And That's the Way it is.  Good night!

  1. Cable TV in rural America in 1948!
Yes. Sorry I doubted you, brother.
It started in Pennsylvania, Arkansas and Oregon.
Roseau County barely had electricity in 1948.

Cable peaked in 2018 with 93 million subscribers. Thanks to streaming, it’s dropped to 66 million.

The future is TV in our heads that we can’t turn off.

  2. Adding to the timeline, what year did Sister Eubestrabius say: "If God had meant us to watch television, we would have been born without brains."

  3. Hey, don't beat yourself up, CJ. I naturally thought he was BS-ing us too as he sports a thin line between fact and fiction on a 24/7 basis; fact checking him is just standard procedure among all his 5 friends.
