Our Horrible Date with Mom Last Night

Hello and welcome to a crabby Saturday here at the Wannaskan Almanac. Today is May 6th.

Mom is very terrible because she brought us to a scary movie that she thought was kid-friendly and when we got home our door was locked and we were stuck outside.

With the WAKWIR and my husband headed off to the MSHSL Robotics State tournament, I thought it would be fun to take the Fifth Grader and the Second Grader out for dinner and a movie.

But no. Instead, my mom took us to a very scary movie that had a lot of guns.

Too many guns.

It was Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3. I recall watching parts of the first two movies of the chain here and there at home with the kids - or maybe it was the older kids. So I was thinking, "Hey! We've seen this before. The kids will like it!" In fact, when I asked them if they wanted to go see Guardians of the Galaxy - and the kids understood that this was not the film with the Easter Bunny and Santa Claus (Rise of the Guardians) - the Fifth Grader said, "Is that the movie with little Groot? Yes!"

I wanted to ask my mom if we could go home.

I was crying during the movie.

I felt so bad. I hadn't realized that there would be so many guns and scary-looking creatures.

And blood.

I should have watched the movie trailer before making such an impulsive decision.

I'd rather be brought to a hockey game, a football game, or a baseball game.

It was really scary.

But there was a funny and happy ending, right?

Yeah, I know.

On the drive home, Mom spotted a full orange moon because it was so low in the sky. It was like 9:15 at night, and we were driving back home from Roseau. We talked about the movie and we prayed on the way home. After we prayed, I wanted to go to sleep.

I just wanted to go to bed.

When we got home, we figured out that our front door was locked and that my mom didn't have her house key. That made me feel really mad at Mom even more.

I was SURE that I had it. It is always attached to the ring with my car key. It has a yellow tag with the WAKWIR's name and our address. I can only think that it fell off somehow, somewhere. So if you find it, please kindly mail it to us!

I had an idea that we could drive to my mom's office to get a paperclip to unlock the door. My mom didn't want to listen to it. Instead, my mom called my dad. He said to open up the window to get through. That did not work. Then my dad told us there was a secret key.

I pitched the idea of staying at her office because she had an office key.

All I could think about was both of my work computers were in the house and I had to get this blog post written for you all! I tried to stay calm for the kids' sake because they were still spooked and upset about the movie. The darkness and the cold didn't help.

We found the key. Then we needed to test all the doors to see if the key worked for one of them. We tried the front door first, then the back door. Then the front door of the garage and then the back door of the garage and it worked! We tried to get in, but it was blocked by some stuff. We had to push the door to move the stuff on the other side to make enough space. Then we stepped over and around the stuff that was in the way. Then we prayed and prayed that the kitchen door was unlocked.

I was already feeling better because I'd already had experience using a credit card to unlock the door to the kitchen. When I saw a key in the deadbolt, I felt encouraged. If the deadbolt had been locked, there is no way we could have gotten through that door.

So we thought that the door was going to be locked, but to our surprise the door was unlocked! When we got into the house we were shocked that we actually got in and we were like, "Yes! We finally got in the house!"

I went straight to my bed and laid on it. I felt happy.

I was relieved. Although I'd entertained thoughts of getting a room at the Hampton Inn, I was glad to be home.

We all got into our pajamas and piled into Mom's bed together.

And that is our story.

P.S. Last night, after all the hubbub and while the kids were still telling me how upset they were, I realized I couldn't find the secret spare key! We looked and looked and could not find it. Just now, after finishing this blog post, the Fifth Grader said, "Hey! I found the key! It was on the floor!"

Today, the three of us look forward to doing projects together and the kids are going to pick the movie.

  1. It appears to have beeen an action packed evening!! I also, am not a fun of movies with too much violence. I am you were able to enter the house. Did anyone feel there was a moral to the story?

    1. Hi! Yes, we did eventually get into the house. Here is another funny: On Monday, after school, Antonin forgot to come to my office and went home on the bus. I got a call from my neighbor who told me he was LOCKED OUT!! I hadn't put the secret key back in its secret spot yet. Moral of the story: You can never have too many hidden keys placed outside.

  2. Oh my - not intending freudenschade here, but I did enjoy the suspense. This tale will, no doubt, be told over and over and over at your house. I know I had a similarly harrowing lost key experience once which resulted in a very expensive trip to the hardware store where I made MANY duplicates and put them anywhere I could think of.

    1. Good thinking! The first commenter asked me what the moral of the story was - and it is definitely this wisdom!

  3. Oh my, good story about getting in the house. BTW: Reminds of the times (yes plural) when my mom would lock the car with the keys inside. She taught me how to open a car door with a coat hanger. She got so good at it that she could go inside a store, get a coat hanger and open the car door in less than 10 minutes (8 spent finding a coat hanger). I had to use that trick myself more than once once I started driving.

    1. I think your mother must have been her own force of nature! I hope she didn't forget Leo after she unlocked the car! :)

    1. The good thing was when Antonin got locked out of the house on MONDAY - it hardly fazed him and he just went over to the neighbor's house. Crazy experiences really help to reframe what normal "could" look like. Ha!
