One of the most enduring combinations to hit the sweets market is that of chocolate, caramel, and nuts. There are many candies that use this combination. Snickers is definitely satisfying. Mrs. Prindables Jumbo Nut Clusters are a lesser known (but much more expensive) example. In my humble opinion, the greatest of all these treats is the Turtle.
The Turtle was introduced by DeMet's way back in 1916 in a little town called Chicago. Back then the nut of choice to mix with chocolate and caramel was the peanut. George DeMet mixed in pecans instead and the dipped chocolates he was left with resembled...you guessed it...a turtle.
Chocolate Turtles...so much better than the ones found in the wild |
For many years turtles were only made with pecans, caramel, and chocolate. In recent times they have branched out. You can now get turtles made with cashews, sea salt caramel, dark almond, or hazelnuts. To me the original will always be best. On a side note, I would like to thank my bride for getting them for me for Valentine's Day!
Chicago is the origin of many of the sweets we enjoy today. Wrigley's gum was invented there in 1905. Fannie May Home Made Candies started in Chicago in 1920. In 1929 Frank C. Mars moved the Mars Candy Factory from Minnesota to Chicago. It has yet to be confirmed, but many Wannaskan Almanac readers believe that Mars Candy was originally founded in Wannaska. That is why no store in Wannaska that is south of the Roseau river carries Mars bars.
So whether you are enjoying a Mars bar, a stick of Wrigley's gum, or (in my case) handfuls of Turtles, remember that you can send you doctor's bills for that onsetting diabetes to Chicago. I am sure they will consider that....sweet!
If I wake up in the morning and can’t get into gear, I down a Fun Size Snickers made in Waco, TX.
