Wannaskan Almanac for Tuesday, March 15, 2022 Fried Ides

Today is a very significant day in history.  There were a lot of things that happened on March 15.  None of them involved turtles, which means that this almanac post will not be about candy or slow moving shelled animals.  The editors and advisory board of the Wannaskan Almanac has urged me to do my best to stay true to the actual historical records and not make fun of those very serious happenings.  I will try.

On March 15, 44 B.C., Roman dictator Julius Caesar was assassinated by a group of nobles that included Brutus and Cassius.  As was customary back in the day, Brutus threw beer bottles at Caesar while Cassius lurked above singing love songs.  This photo (I know, it seems hard to believe) backs up this statement.

On March 15, 1820, Maine became the 23rd state.  Up until then they had been part of Masachusets Massachooseits another state, but like most people they struggled with spelling the name of that other state, so they came up with the name Main.  Legislators and educators met and decided to add the "E" to the end of Maine to give it the long vowel sound.
Can't spell Massachusetts but can spell Pluribus

In 1919, members of the American Expeditionary Force from World War I convened in Paris for a three-day meeting to found the American Legion.  Three weeks later the first American Legion fastpitch tournament occurred.

War is done, baseball has begun

On March 15, 1977, the U.S. House of Representatives began a 90-day closed-circuit test to determine the practicality of showing its sessions on television. At the same time the situation comedy “Three’s Company,” starring John Ritter, Joyce DeWitt and Suzanne Somers, premiered on ABC-TV.  Congress determined the endeavor to be a success as Three's Company still airs reruns today.

Three unknown people try to avoid watching C-span by whatever means necessary

In 1985, the first internet domain name, symbolics.com, was registered by the Symbolics Computer Corp. of Massachusetts.  They chose not to use the domain name Massachusetts.com for obvious reasons.

Symbolics.com...boring, but still better than C-span

Well, I hope this makes it past the censors at the World Headquarters of the Wannaskan Almanac.  If not, you can still enjoy watching an episode of Three's Company today.

  1. Interesting as usual. As a native of that state you discussed, I can confirm it was a nightmare as a kid trying to spell my state's name. Fortunately, it was shortened to Mass. But then the Catholics complained so it was shortened again to MA.
    Everyone loves MA.
