Hmmmmm, sounds like the rough draft outline for

THE RAVEN Part 2 Volume 1 Issue 12 (1995)
An Excerpt:
"Rain dripped from the wide brim of his camouflaged hat as he stood at the edge of the clearing. The tall straight trunks of the popple island, chalky-white on one side, wet-green on the other swayed and creaked against a cold northwest wind. The man looked to the west against the high treetops and studied their silhouettes for any discernible shape of anything that moved as big as the darkening sky itself; anything that was bigger than life, larger than thought possible, imaginable or acceptable by the limits of human thought or knowledge."
His interests were complex but worth the 2000 mile trip to check this modern day monster out. The idea of a DNA-generated dinosaur-sized creature was not beyond his imagination, especially after seeing the movie that wowed the box offices for Spielberg and renewed the nation's craze for dinosaurs. The idea that there was actually something out there was even more intriguing.
Television documentaries that followed the movie debut summarized the possibility as science fiction and Hollywood fantasy, but if a Roseau High school kid was able to do it so simply in his basement laboratory twenty-six years ago, this Whitetailosaurus story could mean big BIG BUCKS!
He thought,
"Whitetailosaurus could become Minnesota's Spotted Owl!"
This was the infamous RAVEN issue that one Wannaska-area subscriber allegedly began hiding from her elementary-age boys after I published the exclamation "Shit!" uttered by Wayne, a character coming home from a science fair competition in Thief River Falls, who took a short-cut through the Hovorka Swamp and slides off the icy road in his jeep into the ditch, along the Wilson Road, a reputedly nasty stretch of no-man's land three miles from the Palmvile Town Hall. [The subscriber does not renew.]
Well, Wayne, eventually gets lost in the woods and drowns in the floating bog with his science project--which as the years pass, evolves into this gigantic gargantuan 'Whitetailosaurus,' that is so big that whole forests grow in its antlers and it exacts revenge on deer hunters and other predators it doesn't like.
"Kruta Swamp 1982”
The whitetail doe gasped her last wild-eyed breath as the wolf packed pulled her to the ground. One wolf ripped at her flank and with its muzzle red with blood and its white fangs gleaming growled at the others to stay back. It gorged itself with huge voracious bites of steaming flesh that spasmodically jerked and quivered beneath in full moon light, deep in the Kruta Swamp.”
The wolves feeding frenzy swept the dark places of the woodland. The other deer and small animals listened apprehensively to the snarls and growls and scent on the wind. Although its head was deep in the carcass of the deer and the noise of the feeding pack all around it, the wolf jerked its head from the bloody cavity to listen. Too late.
Predators became prey that night as the wolf pack tried to flee with full bellies. Trees swept down from the sky and cut them down as would a farmer's scythe through standing grain. Some wolves were smashed into the bloodied ground as though trampled, their pelts forced from around them as clean as from a trapper's skinning blade. Black and gray bodies crashed through the
tops of the tallest trees strained of any mass bigger than a fist. Wolf flesh hung from the treetops to feed the ravens and crows for weeks on end."

Great writing and fabulous art!
ReplyDeleteYou're too kind, eh. In review of this I think its reminiscent of some of Catherin'es dark writings, and if it hadn't been penned in 1995, I'd think plagiaristic.
