Hello and welcome to a Boys State Hockey Championship Saturday, here at the Wannaskan Alamanc. Today is March 7th.
This past week, I watched the movie F Valentine's Day, in which the main character talks about her love of the Raiders football team. "Ride or die!" she exclaimed to the guy who started the scene wanting to steal her wallet, then ended with the two of them doing the secret Raider handshake. With this being the week of Boys State Hockey, I totally get this sentiment.
Loyalty and nostalgia for a favorite sports team abound in this season. SuperBowl, Olympics, Final Four, March Madness, and high school state championships. It's an exciting time. It's an emotionally charged time. These ultimate face-offs make normally sane people paint letters on their bellies, creating human billboards that shout, "TEAM USA!" Face painting and temporary tattoos of mascots and coloring hair, and, of course, big handmade signs declaring love, affection, and loyalty. I love how creative people get with their signage. One mom I chatted with was especially excited to flash her sign, "I don't have any more pucks to give!" Ah, the cleverness.
It's a good time for goodfeels as people anticipate a good game. (I'll be tuning in at noon.) Aside from battling to the finish for the annual championship, people tune in to the hair. Here's the AI overview I got from my quick Google search:
- Top Teams/Styles: Delano, Hibbing, and others featured prominently.
- Trends: A mix of classic mullets, "business in the front, party in the back" styles, and some highlighted/dyed looks.
- Creator: John King continues to curate the popular All-Hockey Hair Team video.
- Purpose: The event celebrates the unique, traditional, and often humorous hairstyles during the state tournament.
- Context: The tournament is widely recognized for both its high-level hockey and its unique, "must-see" hair.
