As I read, "The Race of Will Steger's Life," by Stephanie Pearson, in the July-August 2025 issue of Minnesota Conservation Volunteer yesterday morning, I thought of, of course, my good friend the late Jerry Solom (1945-2019) who was Palmville Township's own legendary explorer. Jerry held Will Steger and Earnest Shackleton, among others, in high regard for their vision and determination.
The link about Jerry, above, contains not only my tribute to Jerry, but Chairman Joe's too that went seemingly viral soon after Jerry walked on, so I think readers will get a sense of the man, his family, and their hand-built vessel Indian Summer.
I admit I fall far, far short of Steger's global accomplishments, as well as Jerry's, but after seeing an architectural sketch of a five story building Steger drew back in 1988, while holed up in a tent waiting out a blizzard in Antarctica, I felt an immediate kinship with the man, remembering that I sketched this one-story building, while waiting out the winter in Palmville.
ReplyDeleteLet's not forget your cruise with Captain Jerry and First Mate Marion across the Gulf of Maine. That was an adventure.
Nor our climb of Black Elk Peak.
