Antonin's Back

Hello and welcome to the last Saturday of summer here at the Wannaskan Almanac. Today is August 26th.

Hello, everyone. I think you've been wondering where I've been. My mom always wakes up early on these beautiful Saturdays. And she does it without me. Until one day, I decided to tell her to wake me up when she wakes up. And that's how we got here. Let's dive in.

So, after all these weeks of my mom waking up early - very early -  you probably want to know what I've been doing. Mostly sleeping (while she's writing these beautiful blog posts.) I have Czech writing. I have Czech homework. It is pretty annoying, but, in fact helpful. For example, every year we go to Czech Republic. This year we went to Czech Republic for 6 weeks. That's different because we usually only stay there for 2 - 4 weeks. And my mom came this year. (The first time in 8 years!) My Czech homework helped me because my parents make me write 25-30 words a day. And I have to write it in Czech cursive. It helps me with my spelling. And I have to read it so I can spell it. It all brings forward to the Czech time with my grandparents. They do not speak English. That means they only speak Czech. That means I have to speak Czech. And I did not have homework in the Czech Republic.

Once we got to the first airport in Vienna (after our 6 weeks in the Czech Republic), we waited. It was really boring and we didn't have a TV. And then once we got to Frankfurt, there was this awesome indoor playground. You have to be in between 4 - 10 years old. So that meant I could play on it and - oooooohhhhh! - I had fun. And fun looks like (putting on the Fun Show) swinging, running, jumping, climbing, sliding down slides super fast!!!

On the plane to Toronto, I watched the trailer for Barbie, I watched the movie Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse, and I played a game of chess on the TV screen. Did you know that device chess is not worth getting? The world champion player of chess - the computer beat him! So don't get chess on your device.

We were feeling great when we got to Toronto because we were finally in North America and in Canada. That meant it was only a 2-hour flight to Winnipeg and then a 2-hour drive to get home! To celebrate, my mom bought Dutch waffles, a Canada sweatshirt for my cousin (who came with us from Czech Republic). We also got Starbucks! While waiting, Lucie felt sick and we had so many gate changes. Then, finally, it stuck to one (gate) and then we finally got on to the plane. On the plane, I didn't really watch any movies. But I'll tell you what. I did watch the TV show Avatar: The Last Airbender. I only watched the first two episodes.

And then we finally got to Winnipeg. While we were going down the escalator, I saw right away my dad, Rosta! It was better than ever! (It was also 12:30am.)

When we got home, my dad gave me this GIANT electric circuit set (for my birthday.) My brother Luke got me a comb/woodcutter/fidget toy and I love playing with it. And my sister Tereza made me a Ditto out of yarn and stuffed it with paper because she couldn't find cotton. She also made me a Pokiball/Dittoball for my Ditto. But Tereza has the Ditto right now because she found it in her backpack (at school).

It feels really good to be home and I'm very happy that I live in Warroad. I really like living in Warroad because it's a peaceful, nice, little, small, good town. It has a library, a good grocery store, good stores, good parks, and we can bike to town!

Yesterday I went to Steinbach in Canada to the Mennonite Village. The Mennonite Village was really fun. I got to touch a donkey, a goat, cows - even an ox! I also got to touch horses. I went on a wagon ride and I got to control the horses. You know how like when you were riding a bike when you were little? This is like that. One end of the strap (reins) is long while the other end is short. For example, if you want to turn left you make the left side long and the right side short. And the same thing if you want to go right but in reverse.

And I saw like 40 chickens in the Mennonite Village and three pigs, two rabbits, and they were all really cute. I said that the pigs were so cute - and they were covered in flies! I saw one of the rabbits - it was brown - and it was hopping. It was really funny because the rabbit was doing little jump hops. My mom told a story about the two rabbits. My mom was basing the story on the rabbits' movements and it was about the rabbits trying to get out of the cage. The brown rabbit was digging a little hole next to the back wall of the enclosure and my mom said, "Hey, let's get out of here." For the black rabbit, that was lying in a hole next to the bunny hut, she said, "Ah forget it. I already dug a hole and look where it got me."

I'm going to wrap it up. It was fun talking with you guys, but this is the end of my blog post. See you next week!

  1. And I married a Mennonite and got my last name. At Tabor College (where I met Paul) I first heard of Steinbach! :)

I really love your writing, Antonin! ♥️

  2. Welcome back, Antonin. I think you are lucky that you know how to speak Czech. Since I am a grandmother, I'm betting your grandparents love that you can talk with them. I also think you are lucky because, after an amazing summer, you get home and go off on another fun excursion in Canada. Have a good start to school!

  3. This is a very interesting post. I love all the details.
Flies on the pigs. Better on them than on us, right Antonin?
