Forecasts of Hope for Torfin, MN

Torsgad august 18 2022

Uncle Wayne has his own daily weather forecast for his specific area on the National Weather Service website called Torfin, Minnesota! Look at the ‘Click map for Forecast’ location.’ It ain’t Wannaska, is it? Palmville Township doesn’t have its own specific forecast, neither does Grimstad Township, nor Golden Valley Township. Only Torfin.

I used to take Weather Spotter classes at the toy factory every year it was offered. They gave me a break from work, paid me for it, never asked anything of me, and I never used it except for my own speculation/interest. I learned a lot in it. One of the things of particular interest was that someone who reported some weather phenomenon (I think it was maybe the late Kenny Eggen) pinpointed his location as ‘Torfin’ when he called the National Weather Service Hotline 1-800-667-1218 about a storm/tornado sighting/large hail, etc, as was explained in one of those spotter classes, and put Torfin on the map!

Torfin was established as a post office on June 7, 1907 in Section 12 of Palmville Township. Its first postmaster was a Norwegian pioneer named Iver Torfin who was the first Roseau County Clerk of Court.

Badly in need of 1-3 inches of rain, forecasts for the stuff have become mere fiction hereabouts. Predicted thunderstorms approach us mightily from North Dakota, building in potential along the Canadian border straight toward Roseau County and Palmville, as we wait in anticipation making sure we have fuel for our generators, batteries for flashlights, plenty of food in our larders, books to read and our phones all charged.

Lightning can be seen. Approaching thunder can be heard and its rumblings felt. Then, on radar, the system splits at Palmville and the rain clouds go north of us toward Roseau, and south of us toward Beltrami Forest, again and again. The ample spring rains we had for an entire month are mere memories now. Still, knowing the penchant for things to go awry here when we wish and pray for rain, we're cautious about talking about it too much because once its starts here, it often doesn't know when to stop.

Comments

  1. Calm chance of mostly, likely, and possibly becoming partly variable - there's poetry in these words. Perhaps even, squibs?

  2. YAY!!!! We got 9/10ths of an inch in two rainfalls, 8 tenths last night, a tenth on either Tuesday night or Wednesday morning according to a depression out by The Shed From Hell. Thursday morning it poured and blew and rained some more. All the grass in the creek basin is flattened and rain drops still linger on leaves leeward from the storm's approach. Everything outdoors seems to be smiling; I can imagine the food plots are ecstatic, their little roots awash with new life. Yeah baby!
