I often listen to the year end countdowns on the radio as they play the top hits from the previous year. This is mainly because I am a boring person and don't have anything really fun to do. With that in mind I have decided to do a top countdown of the best songs by decades on January 4.
Our first stop (notice the DJ jargon) will be in the year 1950. Gasoline was 27 cents per gallon, and one of the favorite toys was a hula hoop. The number one hit was a little ditty by Frankie Laine. Mule Train was on the top of the charts.
Jumping ahead to January 4, 1960 we run into a little hit by Marty Robbins. His song, El Paso, was at the top of the charts. Other items of note were the top movie, The Bridge, and the super popular toy...Barbie's Dream House.
Sadly, we lost this next artist not too long ago. His melodic voice was soothing...like raindrops falling on my head. B J Thomas topped the charts on January 4, 1970 with this hit.
Remember Teddy Ruxpin? Big Wheels? Or were you afraid to leave food out after midnight due to the concern of Gremlins? The year was 1980, and on January 4 the number one hit was Please Don't Go by KC and the Sunshine Band.
The World Wide Web was in its infancy. Tim Berners-Lee created the first web server. Without that, we would never have great blogs like the Wannaskan Almanac. We also wouldn't have easy access to songs like this one, the number one hit on January 4, 1990...Phil Collins and Another Day in Paradise.
Our final song in this trip down memory lane comes from January 4, 2000. We turn to the Country charts for this beauty from Faith Hill. Breathe was the top song. Enjoy, and I will see you next week.
