Almost Rain
Unrelenting heat suddenly defeated
A touch of wind from the north
Suddenly a little cooler
Bearable, welcomed, calmly exhaling
The acrid, constant taste of dust
replaced with something almost forgotten
The scent of...the brain has it hidden away somewhere
Remembered...moisture...fresh, clean water
It has been so long
Water freely falling from the sky
Through flashes of light the horizon
reveals the good fortune of a far away neighbor
Still the smell, the breeze, the anticipation
Maybe this plot of ground will be rewarded
Darkness, wind, that oh so welcome smell!
Fading into light, disappointment, hope dwindles
Then it's gone
That's the Great Plains for you.
