The Future Fifth Grader

Hello and welcome to a school-free Saturday here at the Wannaskan Almanac. Today is May 31st.

Hello and welcome to the Wannaskan Almanac. School-free Saturday here. Today is May 31st and two days ago was the last day of school. So let's get some recap on that.

*Intro muzak - the kind you hear on a podcast.*

It was May 29th. A sunny day when the first activity took place. *Dun, dun, DUN!* My class had the third graders come into our room. We had Morning Meeting with them. At morning meeting we do "the greeting," sharing, and THE activity. Today's activity was *dun, dun, DUN!* playing a dance video. And if you were in my class, you would know this would be my heaven. I LOVE DANCING.

So about halfway through the song, a message came from the intercom: "Please go out to the hallway." And we went out to the hallway. We saw teachers dressed up in inflatable costumes looking like they were riding animals. My former third-grade teacher was riding a donkey. Another teacher was riding a hippopotamus. We cheered and clapped for everybody.

And then came Track & Field. We did a rotation of games for two and a half hours. We started first with Survivor, then Capture the Football, then Gagaball, then soccer, followed by Matball (basically kickball but with mats). Our final rotation was the three-legged race. I had one partner, and his name was Davin. We did not the worst, but not the best. The whole track and field experience overall was exceptional. It was good. I had fun.

So then we're all tired out from doing that stuff, right? Well, guess what? We had recess right after! And guess what we did after recess? We had a picnic, which was outside. Hmmm....which was fun, but by this point I was also in pain and tired from lack of energy.

For the picnic, I had an Uncrustable and a monster cookie. After a bite of the cookie, I crumbled it into crumbs and threw it out for the seagulls to eat. I got within a meter of a seagull and I got to see its facial details. It had a long yellow beak with black beady eyes, with a little white eye stuff around it. Its head was white, but going lower down, its body was gray. Its feet were yellow, and I couldn't see if they had webbing or not. I liked how the seagull was far away from everybody, and I could just chill with the seagull.

After the picnic, I played outside AGAIN. I played some lava tag; I played a game with my friend Eli where everybody was a zombie and we had to find a cure for it, so we ran away from everybody. We kind of forgot about finding a cure midgame. And then, about 1:45, I pretended to be my twin brother Dave. I don't have a twin brother, so I made up all this lore about being homeschooled because I got sick a lot. Nobody really believed me, so it was just me and Eli saying stuff like, "Hey, remember in Kindergarten when So-and-So tried to pull your hair out?" We'd both always answer, "Was this real or fake?"

So then the day was FINALLY over, I said my farewells, and I ventured off to the bus. Since it was a struggle to walk because I had all the stuff from the top of my locker, a teacher stopped me mid-path and said, "You can't hold all this stuff. I will help you." I was like, "No, thank you?" and she was like, "NO. I'm gonna help you." And then she helped me, and I got on the bus a little late.

So then I was on the bus *bussy, bussy, bussy* and the moment I stepped on our cement driveway - and only then - did I realize that I was FREE.

So then later, I played with my friends in the neighborhood. We did some parkour on old cars, and I was overheating, so my body brought me to the river and dunked my head in the river. I felt so refreshed after that. Soon, I had to go home to cut the grass. The grass cutter wasn't working, though, so I had to do it when my dad came home.

That night, when I was lying in my bed, my last thought before I fell asleep was: "Man. I'm a Fifth Grader now."
