Hello and welcome to a Minecraft Saturday here at the Wannaskan Almanac. Today is April 5th.
This weekend the Minecraft movie dropped! This is a big deal because Minecraft is one of the most popular games in the world and everybody has been wanting a Minecraft movie for as long as Minecraft has been in existence.
Antonin would like to correct that last statement. Minecraft is THE most popular game in the world. Everyone is looking forward to the next Minecraft update - Summer Drop - which features something called the happy gas. The happy gas is probably THE BEST thing in Minecraft because up to four people can ride on it. (So what is it?) The happy gas is a mob and is also a monster in Minecraft. It’s a good monster. It can fly. You can stand up on it. It’s THE BEST transportation - better than the current best option of a camel or a horse.
Back to the movie…another fun feature is that it’s not animated. Instead it feels like a “real” place - something similar to Jumanji. We’ve been binge watching trailers on YouTube. What the kids like most is how the creators have made the Minecraft world in 3D. For example, square fruit, the portal to the Nether, the monsters, and the diamond swords. For me, as a mom, it was fun to see the crafting table “come to life” as a solid object.
Another plus for the movie is its actors, the headliners Jack Black as “Steve” and Jason Momoa as an ‘80s video gamer has-been hoping to add some new spit and shine to his title as “Gamer of the Year, 1989.”
Also on the mom side, I love that the film takes place in a “real,” albeit heavily CGI’ed setting instead of an animated world. Because the kids watch a lot of cartoons or animated videos and films already, when we watch a film together, I like to pick ones set in real, physical spaces. This choice is like me sitting on the other side of the teeter totter of entertainment to share with kids other types of films. In doing so, they have fallen in love with such classics as Goonies, The Sandlot, The Mighty Ducks, and Little Giants, Heidi, and a myriad of Czech fairytales set in real places in Czech Republic that the kids have visited.
But wait! There’s more!
Roso Theatre has partnered with Warroad Dairy Queen to offer a fun “Dinner & a Movie” experience from April 2 - 10!
With Dad out of town with the robotics team, this will be a thrilling outing. Dinner, a special Minecraft-exclusive dessert, movie tickets, AND a snack at the theater.
It makes doing all the chores before the show worth it!
