Wannaskan Almanac for Tuesday, October 22, 2024 My Superpower is Laughing

The wit of the teens I work with is always on display.  As a middle school teacher I have seen many a comical situation.  They sometimes help to balance out the mind boggling things my eyes endure.  Here are a couple of the more lighter moments I have seen over the years.

I was teaching a group of transition students.  They were students who were working on learning English.  One day I had to take them up to the health room to do eye exams.  The nurse asked a student to look in the viewer and read the first line.  The student complied and then sat back with a confused look on his face.  He looked in again and then sat back looking even more frustrated.  He looked in a third time and then told the nurse, "I don't know what the word is but I could spell it."

He passed his vision test.

So you can't pronounce ulythbxpgo?

Another time we were in the library and the librarian was telling me that one of the students in the class was a gossip.  One of the boys eyes lit up.  "What's a gossip?" he asked.

I jumped in, "I don't know what a gossip is but one of your classmates does."

"Oh yeah, who is it?" he replied.

Gossip had been achieved.

Sometimes I have to sit back and reflect on the good parts in order to balance out the tough ones.  This past Friday I broke up a fight, had two students try to argue with me about the dress code (I don't argue with students, I let them take it up with a principal), and had a student throw their gum on the stairs while walking by (he got to clean the stairs while I took a break and cheered him on).  Teaching middle school is not for the faint of heart!

  1. Oh, I don't know, it ought to be easy for someone with your usual sense of humor. Judging by the majority of your posts, you've never grown out of it, eh.

  3. Injecting laughter into learning prepares students for life far beyond the classroom lessons. Go team!
