Praise the Lord, we made it to June which means Mark Hamill's "May the ____" Tribute has come to a close. *Whew*
May The 26 Be The Counties In The Republic Of Ireland
May The 27 Be The 5 Vowels & 22 Consonants In The Spanish Alphabet
May The 28 Be A Complete Set Of Dominoes
May The 29 Be The Number Of Days In The Month Of February (In Leap Years Only)
May The 30 Be The Total Number Of Tracks On The Beatles' White Album
May The 31 Be The Number Of Flavors Of Baskin Robbins Ice Cream
This was much harder than it looks, folks. On May 26, Hamill tweeted:
Alas, our favorite fictitious galactic hero made it to the end.
1979 - Pope John Paul II becomes the first pontiff to visit a communist country.
Millions of spectators lined the streets of Warsaw as the Pope began his nine-day tour of his native Poland.
I have several books on JP2 (yes, this totally would have been his rapper nickname). My favorite is Peggy Noonan's, John Paul the Great: Remembering a Spiritual Father. I like this book because it is incredibly reader-friendly. Anyone of any faith or background can learn about the Polish man, Karol Wojtyła, who would go on to become the first non-Italian pope in 1978 after more than 400 years, and what makes him so incredibly special and unique, all through the eyes and experiences of the author.
My husband is from a formerly communist country so this date hits a little closer to home in terms of significance and deep appreciation for this act. Remember, it would be ten years later that communism would fall. Many faithful Catholics - especially from former East Bloc countries - attribute this in part to JP2.
A couple of weeks ago, I finished reading an autobiography, My Heart Will Triumph by Mirjana Soldo. Soldo was one of six child visionaries who have been seeing Marian apparitions at Medjugorje since June 24, 1981. Again, JP2 is referenced in Soldo's book as she shares an account of her own personal audience with the pope.
1967 - Benno Ohnesorg is killed
A police officer shot the unarmed German student at a demonstration against the state visit of the controversial Shah of Iran. It later ruled that the shooting was not an act of self-defense. The event was pivotal for the foundation of the terrorist organization “Movement 2 June”.
1953 - Queen Elizabeth II is crowned
The coronation in London's Westminster Abbey was the first televised major international event in history. Elizabeth's accession to the throne followed the death of her father, King George VI, 16 months previously.
Here's the blog post I previously wrote about the Queen in regards to her birthday. Note: Her "official" birthday is NEXT Saturday on June 9!
1946 - Italy becomes a parliamentary republic
The transition from a monarchy to today's Italian Republic was effected by the favorable outcome of a referendum, in which 89 percent of Italians, also including women for the first time, took part.
Have you read about Italy in the news this week? If not, have a read now. This is serious stuff, people. Italy's populist coalition: What you should know.
1847 - Felix Mendelssohn's Wedding March is used at a wedding for the first time
Dorothy Carew and Tom Daniel were the first to use the iconic piece for their wedding ceremony. The event that made the work world famous was the wedding of Victoria, Princess Royal and Prince Frederick William of Prussia in 1858. Have a listen!
2008 - Bo Diddley, American singer-songwriter, guitarist
1987 - Andrés Segovia, Spanish guitarist
1941 - Lou Gehrig, American baseball player
1882 - Giuseppe Garibaldi, Italian military, politician
We made it through Week 1 of Summer Vacation. Kid #3 plans to run cross-country in the fall so I have been helping him get his summer miles by running with him. His goal is to run 100 miles by the time practice starts in August. All I can say is, if I make it to 100, I'm going to ask the coaches for an honorary 100 miles t-shirt.
Get outside, get in your miles and make it a great Saturday!

332 days until May 1. Looking forward to more fun facts from the kids between now and then.
ReplyDeleteI agree with WWC: I, too, look forward to more posts on your life "down home." Recognizing that writing such posts makes demands not appreciated by most of the population, I just want to say how much I enjoy your family stories and insights. You might also consider letting your readers in on the process of writing a book of fiction. Yes, readers, Kim is nearing the finish line of her second book, "Etiquette Girl," which follows her already published first novel "Elevator Girl." Want an excellent adventure of your own? Be sure to read both. JPS
ReplyDeleteI owe you an apology. Here, all this time, I thought you were Kid Hruba. I mean the facts bear this out. You are apparently younger than all of us, including Tuesday's child, a Mr. Bouchard, a Canadian immigrant, who gnashes his teeth annunciating the word 'caramel' in public, and Woe-Wednesday's child, who is among the again-younger set, although he was truly born on a Tuesday. I think I'm in the middle of the elder aged pack, then JPS (not her real name) and finally eldest Chairman Joe, both of whom I hold in high esteem, of course. A person should, if possible, respect their elders ... But the real reason I thought you were Kid Hruba, was the mosquito carcass I had smushed on my monitor that obscured the 'm' of your name. I stand corrected.
ReplyDeleteWhen I originally commented I clicked the -Notify me when new feedback are added- checkbox and now each time a comment is added I get four emails with the identical comment. Is there any approach you may take away me from that service? Thanks! online casino
