Wannaskan Almanac for Saturday, October 20th

Good morning and welcome to the Saturday edition of the Wannaskan Almanac. Today is October 20th.

Family Funny of the Week
The Toddler: "Be a witch for Halloween."
Me: "Can't I be a mommy?"
Toddler: "No. You're my favorite witch."
Later he informed me, "You're my witch."

This witchy mama took the littles to Doug's Supermarket Halloween Extravaganza yesterday. Batman and Ladybug enjoyed activities such as making cereal necklaces, decorating pumpkins, ring toss, milk mustache photo op, coloring, tattoos and decorating pumpkin cookies. They gobbled up their cookie and saved the rest of their treats for later. The highlight of the event was the hay ride. We'd assumed there'd be horses, but the long ride through town, down the bike path AND a farmer's field, more than made up for the equine lack. We sang a Raffi favorite "Down on Grandpa's Farm" adding our own animals, you know like horses, cows, pigs, trees...

Family Scare of the Week
Getting a much-anticipated piece of mail from the DMV only to learn that it did NOT contain my teen's driver's license but instead a request for her Driving Log. (Required and yet somehow forgotten on the day we went to the local DMV branch.) Thank goodness I hadn't emptied my office trash yet.

Family Celebrations of the Week
We celebrated another teen birthday (another driver coming to our Wannaskan roads soon!) And two name days. In Czech, anyone with a typical Czech or biblical name, gets one day of the year to celebrate their namesake. This svátek celebration varies from family to family. It can be as big a bash as a birthday or as small as a handshake with well wishes. At our house? Sometimes cake; usually candy.

Epiphany of the Week
If I want support from my spouse, things will probably go better if I hand off the balls I'm juggling instead of pitching them to the ground and saying, "Pick them up."

What I Really Needed to Hear this Week

New Book I Think Looks Pretty Good
The true story of two sisters who vanished, the father who kept searching, and the adults who conspired to keep the truth hidden. According to this Missing in Minnesota post, "The book examines the events which led to Sandra Grazzini-Rucki abducting her daughters on April 19, 2013, during a custody dispute with her ex-husband, David Rucki. On November 18, 2015 –944 days after they disappeared – the girls were found living on a ranch in northern Minnesota by law enforcement, headed by the Lakeville Police Department." The book will be released on Monday, October 23.

Recipe Recommendation of the Week: Pan-fried Boneless Pork Loins
Yowza! This delight is all about the spice and cooks in ten minutes. You don't even need a recipe.

Culinary Flashback the Week: Baked Pork Chops in Cream of Mushroom Soup with Green Beans
I don't think I've made this dish since we lived in Czech Republic. I couldn't even remember the proper title. A dish my paternal grandmother always made, this was one of my favorite comfort foods abroad. The only snag was they didn't have Cream of Mushroom Soup in the Czech Republic (I suspect this is a uniquely American food.), so I had to improvise.

New Favorite Band: The High 48s
This bluegrass band from the Twin Cities played a gig at last week's October Festival. Woo-wee! Super energetic, they were fun to watch as well as to listen to. They played both familiar tunes and original songs.
