Slime & Snow White's Prince

YAY! and welcome y'all to a fabulous Saturday here at the Wannaskan Almanac. Today is June 29th, aka the LAST Saturday of June which means one month down, two to go of #SummerVacay2019.

The flock has returned from their annual migration across the great Atlantic pond and summer has officially started.

We kicked off with an organizational map I prepared while they were still in flight. What the heck is an "organizational map?" It's a visual representation of all the stuff I have to do and want to do in the next two months, including spending time with loved ones and brushing up on my Czech language skills. I'm a mind-mapper type of gal and so my map consisted of small rectangular strips of cut-up notecards that filled a library table. I lumped all the bits of paper under several headers such as Relationships, Red Shoes, and Me (because a body's gotta do something for the self, no?)

And why am I taking up valuable Wannaskan Almanac real estate to tell you all this?

Because I am organizationally challenged.

Which is a problem when you juggle a busy life of  family, business, creative endeavors and whatnot.

My kids have enjoyed the benefits of my disability, feasting on a steady diet of Get-Out-of-Jail free cards and doing far less than even the bare minimum of chores around the house during the school year simply because I could not get my act together.

I reasoned that, well, they had school all day and then homework, whereas I, equally busy in my own realm, have a more flexible schedule and could handle all the domestic duties.

But now it's summer and the tables have turned.

My busy continues while spread out before them lie two whole months of stress-free bliss. Yes, folks, it was time to capitalize on my in-house child labor.

The organizational map led to a domestic plan that included daily and weekly chores, shift assignments, job descriptions, and babysitting.

The 7-year-old embraced the newly found order and drew a sign up informing family members, "Thank you, No TV Today, No movies, only Večerniček, only at night," and hung it on the gate at the top of the steps as one would for a proper proclamation such as this.

Don't worry; it hasn't all been work, work, work.

With the No-TV edict in place, the little kids took their older sister's polymer science project kit and made slime. Yes, folks, we've had clear slime, blue slime, square slime, round slime and red slime all week.

Prairie Fire Children's Theater is in town hosting a production of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. With references to John Wayne, Fresh Prince of Bel Air and Elvis Presley, I assure you, this is not the typical run-of-the-mill Disney version. While Snow White may be the fairest maiden in all the land, the WAKWIR landed the role of Prince, who is the hammiest fellow in all the kingdom. The little sister is making her theatrical debut as one of the Townspeople.

You may have seen us out and about riding our bikes. With our fluorescent orange spray-painted helmets and our fluorescent yellow construction vests, we're easy to spot in a crowd or on the street. The WAKWIR was not pleased with the negative impact this garb was having on his cool factor. But his attitude may have changed when his little sister came home with a coupon from the local sheriff for a FREE ICE CREAM CONE at Dairy Queen.

Yes, Wannaska peeps - if a local law enforcement officer "catches" a kid wearing a bike helmet, the kid gets a coupon for a free ice cream. (When the sheriff sidled up next to us, the pulling over part was a bit awkward, but the reward was worth it.)

So the lesson learned from this week of #SummerVacay2019?

It's worth it to look dopey for a free Dairy Queen.

Kids' Corner

So, the WAKWIR is finally back with his ( again) awesome stories.

After a series of long flights we arrived in Winnipeg and my little sister literally started bawling when she saw my mom. It was funny. The next day was pretty calming, I got to go to my friend’s house, and the next day I went to my friend’s house...and then my mom FORCED me to do this play which I have been working on this whole week because I got the second main character and we only have 5 days to memorize lines and dances! But I survived. So far. Its Friday and I don’t really know if I’ll survive any longer with the play because...we have to perform the play twice and I am really only comfortable with once. But, yeah that is what happened in the last week and one-half.

On This Day

Historic Highlights (credits)

2007 - Apple releases the first iPhone
The iPhone revolutionized the smartphone industry and for a while made Apple one of the world's most valuable companies.

...and child development and family relationships as we knew it would be changed forever. The iPhone11 is rumored to release in late September. (Article that says so.)

1995 - The Space Shuttle Atlantis docks with the Russian space station Mir
The rendezvous in space marked a new age of cooperation between the former Cold War adversaries. The docking created the largest man-made Earth satellite in history.

...just when we were making progress in international relations, FX launches The Americans in 2013 to remind us what all the Cold War hubaloo was about. Admittedly, I really enjoyed the first season or two, but then the kids got involved with the spying, and the violence got more violent while the plot became increasingly obfuscated. (Word of the Day: Obfuscate - render obscure, unclear, or unintelligible.) Oh, yeah, then there were the 2016 elections...

1990 - Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) are banned to protect the ozone layer
The London Amendment to the Montreal Protocol stipulated that CFCs be phased out by 2000 in developed countries and by 2010 in developing countries. CFCs are one of the substances most harmful to the ozone layer, escalating the greenhouse effect and global warming.

...our refrigerators and hockey rinks had to be pitched and revamped.

1986 - Richard Branson breaks the record for the fastest Atlantic crossing by boat
The British businessman took about three days to cross the ocean in his speedboat “Virgin Atlantic Challenger II”. He was denied the prestigious Blue Riband for the fastest crossing because he refueled on the way.

...then went on to be a cool dude doing tons of stuff, including his latest endeavor space travel. “The only reason I’m able to do all the things I do and to keep on top of a busy schedule without getting too stressed is because I stay fit,” the billionaire entrepreneur wrote recently on his blog.

On that note, if you're looking to stay fit, you can attend yoga with one of our Wannaskan Almanace writers on Tuesday and Thursday mornings in Roseau.

1927 - Two U.S. aviators complete the first transpacific flight
Lester Maitland and Albert Hegenberger had taken off from Oakland Municipal Airport the previous day. Their “Bird of Paradise” aircraft touched down in Oahu, Hawaii 25 hours and 50 minutes later.

...We truly stand on the shoulders of those before us. Imagine the number of flights to and from the Hawaiian islands daily. Enjoy this short film of the pair taking off from Tucson on their way to California.

Happy Birthday to You!🎶
