Wannaskan Almanac 76er Special...April 16, 2019

So today is a 76er huh?  You will have to wait for a little bit of almanac history before I reveal the secret behind that.
On this day in history:
1457 BC  Egyptian forces defeat a Canaanite army at the battle of Megiddo.  This is the first major battle with a reliably accorded account.  The Egyptians were led by Pharaoh Thutmose III, and his scribe (Tjaneni) kept a journal of the battle.  Records are sketchy on whether or not Tjaneni received a Pulitzer.
73 AD  Masada falls to the Romans, ending the Jewish revolt.  Almost 1000 occupants took their own lives rather than surrender to the Romans.

1521 AD  Martin Luther arrives at the Diet of Worms assembly.  This sounds way worse than it actually was.  Diet refers to an assembly and Worms refers to the town they were in.  He was reported to have arrived early...you know...the early bird gets the Worm.

Now to the magical number...76.  Your tough, skill testing question is:  Approximately every 76 years what happens?
a.  A woman admits that a man was right
b.  A chili festival is held in Wannaska
c.  Halley's comet zips by Earth
d.  The Philadelphia 76ers wear pink and purple uniforms to celebrate Bing Crosby's birthday
e.  All of the above
If you answered e, you may very well be correct.  However, the only event that I could verify as happening every 76 years was the passage of Halley's comet.  This comet's passage in 1910 created quite a stir.  In that year, telescope sales skyrocketed as the comet neared.  Hotels were booked solid with people longing to view the event from the hotel roofs.  Many people believed that the comet was going to end civilization.  Camille Flammarion was a French astronomer who convinced many that the comet's tail contained a poisonous gas called cyanogen that would destroy life on Earth.
The New York Times did a piece on Flammarion's claims which led to mass hysteria.  People flocked to churches to prepare their souls for death.  Others purchased gas masks and sealed off their houses to prevent the infiltration of the poisonous gas.
The comet passed by, and the only notable death was that of Mark Twain...not from poisonous gas but instead from old age.  He was 76 years old...and had been born as the comet had shot by overhead in 1835.
Thanks for reading!  Feel free to subscribe to the Wannaskan Almanac so you won't miss a single edition.  I believe it is released every 76 years...approximately.
