Wannaskan (Happy Birthday, Baby!) Almanac for Saturday, August 11

Greetings, good morning, and welcome to another Saturday edition of the big W.A. Today is August 11th.

At our house, we've just wrapped up Week 11 of Summer Vacation. We're in the double digits now! Only 3 weeks to go 'til it all comes to an end. Last week I talked about work and folks didn't appreciate that much. So, moving onward, I will remain firmly entrenched in the present until the inevitable is upon us. (I hope my kids have enough underwear for the new school year.)

This was a pretty quiet week for us. What am I saying? It's never quiet here! My prankster-child decided to bring a snake into the house. I got a frantic tattle-tale phone call from the Oldest. The snake went out, but later my son came back in with a frog who happily hopped from his hand unto the kitchen floor. EEK! I have serious reptilian/amphibian heebie-jeebies. After THAT, he came in with a snake tail. "Look mommy, it's still wiggling and it's already been like, an hour." I suggested he might like the film Snakes on A Plane and last Monday's blog post by our W.A. peep and Monday poet, Jack Pine Savage, entitled The Snake, the Frog, and Me.

The big happening at our house TODAY is the birthday of Kid #5. He turns the big 3. Last weekend grandma was here and we celebrated a pre-birthday with a platter of chocolate chip cookies with three candles on top. I pulled out my ice cream sandwich maker to make ice cream sandwiches. Apparently I pitched the directions, confident in my knowledge of ice cream sandwich making. I really regret that. Maybe there were no directions in the box when I bought this Pampered Chef gadget 10 years ago. If that's the case, then I regret the confidence the manufacturer had in my ability to figure out this gadget.

I really admire moms who do themed birthday parties for their kids. I used to be like that - even before Pinterest was a thing. Recently kids and I discussed this. The prankster-kid commented I had significantly copped out on this birthday effort, stealthy in my success of pitching blueberry buchta (i.e. Czech for plain 'ole everyday cake) as an adequate annual alternative. (They hardly remember themed paper plates and cups with matching plastic tablecloths.)

But then someone else piped up, "What about that strawberry cake you made one year?" Then another kid, "And my train cake!" A list spewed forth from the mouths of (my) babes: Bakugan, Transformers, Cars, Little People farm, ladybug, owl." (The Middle Child has already put in his request for a Lego cake for March 2019. I don't see how I'm going to get out of that one.)

In my defense, I don't always pass off plain 'ole everyday cake for celebrations. I do have my one go-to congratulatory cake which is a three-layered yellow or chocolate cake made from scratch with chocolate mousse frosting. (Joy of Cooking, p. 1005) I'm firmly in the camp that scorns making cake-from-a-box. (But will happily eat yours.)

So what will I make this year?

The Toddler is into Batman, so we were discussing Batman cake. (His little legs just shook when he opened his present from grandma: Batman jammies.) But the thing is - I don't think he really likes cake that much. And, while I know it's not supposed to be all about me, I don't mind saying that, for the amount of work that goes into making a cake - be it themed or 3-layered - I like to see the recipient enjoy the fruits (or rather desserts) of my labor.

He does love cookies though. And I do have a bat cookie cutter. And the 6-year old did ask if we could make "shaped cookies." (Read: helper).

A quick look through Pinterest has my legs shaking. I might have to focus more on the bat and less on the man. Good thing my super power is persuasion.

Fun Facts from the Kids

The Coffee Days

Age 12 to current time…

When I was very, very little: “Yucky.”
When I was 4: “p-u!”
When I was 5: “That stuff is gross.”
When I was 6: “Why does Mommy drink that stuff?”
When I was 7: “That stuff is weird.”
When I was 8: “She drinks it all the time, but it’s tastes I don’t know, different?”
When I was 9: “It has a vile taste.”
When I was 10: “I don’t like it, but I could drink it if I wanted to.”
When I was 11: “Add a couple of tablespoons of sugar into it, and I’ll be fine!”
When I’m 12: “Hey Mom! Can you make me some coffee?”

Hello my friends!!! Welcome to the Coffee Days! You are probably wondering why a little boy like me, drinks coffee? I’ll tell you. #1: I need to get a different energy source that’s not sugar. #2: I need to stay up longer at night, so I can read. #3: It keeps me from taking naps or getting drowsy during the day since these days, I have full days and cannot sleep until about 11 o’clock. And that’s where the reading at night comes in!

Yesterday (Friday), my mom made me coffee. Well, technically. She had a thermos that still had coffee. So, she gave me a cup, and then I added way too much of this very sweet creamer. Purposely and accidentally. I wanted to have a lot of creamer, but I didn’t know how much and then I accidentally added way too much creamer; but I enjoy sweet coffee! That same day, my mom made this chocolate coffee bean treat that I already ate enough that my mom told me to stop.

I don’t know whether caffeine makes you shorter, or it stunts your growth. I don’t know the real answer because kids tell me both answers. Well, that basically sums up the article about the Coffee Days and, please tell me, which caffeine answer is right, at dav.hruby.a@gmail.com and please, don’t spam my Gmail account. It will be hard to create a new one.
