September 3, 2019 The Wannaskan Almanac

It is the first Tuesday in September, which means that unless the date is September 1 (which it isn't, I checked using Siri) then summer is sort of over.  I know that some fact-checking wizard will come up with the idea that summer ends on September 20 and that fall...or autumn...starts on September 21.  For me, however, the last day of summer is that lovely day in September when we have our last summer holiday...Labor Day...and it just makes sense to me to end summer right there.  If I wait until the next major holiday it would be Thanksgiving, and that seems a little late to be firing up the grill while wearing my flip flops!
There actually are alternate ideas as to when summer ends.  The astronomical start to autumn for 2019 is September 23.  This is based on the position of the Earth in relation to the Sun.  The Sun is at an equinox when both spring and autumn start.  It is at a solstice at the beginning of winter and summer.  A solstice is when the Sun reaches either its most northern or southern point in the sky, while an equinox is when the Sun is directly passing over the Earth's equator.
The meteorological start of a season is based on the annual temperatures over a 12 month calendar.  Each season stats on the first of a month and lasts for three months.  In the northern hemisphere, spring begins on March 1, summer on June 1, autumn on September 1, and winter on December 1.

On this day in history:
36 BC...the Battle of Naulochus.  Sextus Pompeius was defeated by Marcus Vispanius Agrippa.  Before heading out to battle, Sextus' parents asked him to send them information about the battle by uttering the famous quote, "Text us, Sextus".  Thankfully they weren't dyslexic.
1791 AD...France adopts the French Constitution making France into a constitutional monarchy.  This means that there is still a monarch but their powers are restricted by the constitution.  In our family my lovely wife, Queen Sara, has refused to let her powers be limited by this.  She uses a straight up monarchy.  All hail the Queen!
Since I am officially wrapping up summer, I thought I would share a couple of summer cartoons with you.

I can really relate to that second one.  Growing weeds is so easy...all it takes is planting pretty much any vegetable!
My hope is that your summer was great, that your fall is relaxing, and that you enter into this cooler time of year with wonderful memories...and a full pantry.
