Wannaskan Almanac for Saturday May 26th

Happy Saturday!

It's May 26th. At our house that means summer vacation. Yes, all the school-age kiddos have passed another grade and are ready to relax into summer. I learned a long time ago that summer is an all-hands-on-deck, full-time gig. While the kids are having their adventures and enjoying all summer brings, parents are schlepping kids to swimming lessons, sports practices, art camps, church camps, library activities, free ice cream events, state park activities, the beach, the park, to friends' houses, to relatives and, well, you get the point. In Wannaskan country, we slather sunscreen, spray for bugs and keep an ever-watchful eye out for ticks and poison ivy.

Summer highlights for our family include: the trampoline kids got for Christmas, the canoe we got from my parents, Czech family camp (going on this weekend), a few days at the cabin where I spent my early childhood, and who knows, maybe even a road trip out west! We made several treks to Montana, Idaho, and Washington when our kid crew was younger and fewer in number. But these trips have been replaced with transatlantic flights for the kids to spend time with their Czech relatives. But as our oldest child inches closer to high school graduation, it's sinking in, just how limited our time is as a 7-person family unit.

Along with the canoe, we inherited a ton of camping gear, properly outfitting our large family. Maybe instead of a long drive out to the Grand Canyon, we'll try shorter weekend jaunts. The last time I was on the Superior Hiking trail was when I was 18 years old.

What do YOU hope to get out of Summer 2018?

In closing, happy graduation and congratulations to all the students donning caps and gowns and moving their tassel from the right to the left. At our local graduation ceremony last night, the superintendent read from Dr. Seuss' Oh,the Places You'll Go! I'm particularly fond of this book because my aunt and uncle gifted me a copy when I graduated from high school, many, many moons ago. I still have it and still read it to my family.

Make it a great Saturday, Kid, and go move mountains!

  1. I hope to get out of the summer of 2018 knowing everyone I know and love came through it alive and well. It's all I can possibly hope for.

As for 'Solo' and all the other Star Wars characters, I can envision a few of your possibly alike-age and minded compatriots in my minds eye. You wouldn't happen to be a high achieving quantum physics addict, by chance? Not that it has anything at all to do with it. Just past experience ...

I did try to find some stats to sort of back up my feeling about it, but they all let me down, including the site that said a Star Wars fan is likely to be a wealthy 49 year old male ... which, for our purposes here blows my theory all to, well, 'smithereens.' That being said, that's a word you never hear in adventure comics story (nor Star Wars) descriptions. Nobody says, "The Star ship blew up in smithereens." That's a really great word too--and not even our President tweets it. Imagine.

I did find this site: https://womenandhollywood.com/female-fans-are-taking-star-wars-into-their-own-hands-ad2b56cfc496/ which was significant if only for the remote fact I actually saw the scene where the top predominant female character on the site kicked the villain's butt. I watched it at my step-daughter's house where I watch virtually all, if any, Star Wars/spacemen (and women)/alien/ghost hunter/haunting zombie phenomenon TV shows. I think she's the same ... er, generation ... as you, so I still may have some basis for my inklings. <<<'inklings' another greatly unused word these days, who knew?

    Thanks for this!

  2. Aha! You've returned to one of your fortes: the home front and all the big-small goings on there. Always a pleasure to read and experience.

What do I hope to get out of this summer? My wishes are few: to stay out of the heat and humidity in a cool place writing my little heart out. To be privileged to continue the grand adventure within the partnership I have with my husband, Joe. To romp with my service dog, Willa, as much as one can "romp" at my esteemed age. To retain the favor of friends like you, and to continually renew my dearest spiritual practices. You see, except for the heat and humidity, summer is the same as any other season for me. If one sets up expectations of the new and different for a particular time, disappointment lurks in the substrata. Enjoy the moment, whatever the season. JPS
